Microsoft 365 E7: Who’s in charge when AI is at work?

On 1 May, Microsoft is launching a new enterprise licence called E7. What matters is not so much the product name as the message behind it: AI, security and identity are conceived as an integrated operating model.

In a nutshell:

  • Productivity is becoming a key management issue: AI must be managed, not just used.
  • Microsoft 365 E7 = new operating model: AI, identity and security are all interconnected.
  • Not a standard upgrade: only worthwhile if the system is sufficiently mature and the usage requirements are met.

An uncomfortable but necessary question

For a long time, productivity was a question of tools. With artificial intelligence, it is becoming a question of leadership. As autonomous agents plan, execute and prepare decisions, the focus is shifting. Productivity no longer stems primarily from speed, but from controllability.

The real question, then, is: who is in charge when AI is at work? Microsoft 365 E7 is Microsoft’s response to this shift. Not in terms of volume. Not in terms of explanation. But in terms of structure.

Why is the current model no longer working?

The traditional digital workplace follows a familiar principle: people use applications. Security protects users. Governance regulates access. This model is reaching its limits.

Generative AI operates contextually. Agents act autonomously. Identities are no longer exclusively human. This fundamentally changes the nature of responsibility, risk and control. Microsoft 365 E5 only partially reflects this reality. The upcoming Microsoft 365 E7 addresses precisely this issue, but it is not automatically the right choice for every organisation.

What is E7 actually about?

Microsoft 365 E7 is not a traditional licence upgrade. It is a business model designed for a hybrid workforce comprising both people and AI:

  • AI is becoming an integral part of the workplace: Microsoft Copilot is no longer just an add-on, but an integral part of the work architecture. Work IQ creates a semantic link between emails, meetings, documents and tasks. AI understands work, rather than simply speeding it up.
  • Agents are actors, not scripts: with Agent 365, agents are given their own identities. They are registered, monitored and controlled in the same way as users. This creates transparency, traceability and accountability. Automation is no longer a grey area.
  • Zero Trust is being consistently expanded: the comprehensive Entra Suite integrates identity, network and context. Access is assessed on a case-by-case basis – for both people and agents. Security becomes a management responsibility, not a technical discipline.

Business relevance: the decisive test

Microsoft 365 E7 is recommended if your organisation is sufficiently mature or if the value for money offered by the individual components is demonstrably worthwhile in your specific context.

In practical terms, this means:

  • Maturity level prior to licensing: E7 requires a functioning identity management system, clean data structures, established security baselines and effective governance. Where these fundamentals are lacking, E7 exacerbates existing shortcomings.
  • Value for money over comprehensiveness: Added value is only realised if Copilot, Entra-Suite and agents are actively used. If individual components remain unused, cost-effectiveness is quickly undermined.
  • Informed alternatives: In many cases, a tailored combination of E5 and selected add-ons is the better choice, both strategically and financially, than the comprehensive full package.

Microsoft 365 E7 is therefore not a standard recommendation, but a deliberate architectural and investment decision. For some organisations, it is the right choice today. For others, it would simply be too expensive.

A critical perspective: Where do decisions go wrong?

Microsoft 365 E7 is unlikely to fail because of technical issues. It will fail because of unrealistic expectations:

  • Overestimated maturity: Modern licences are no substitute for clear processes and responsibilities.
  • Cost blindness: The licence fee is fixed. The cost of using AI is not.
  • Unclear roles: If it is not made clear what people decide and what agents carry out, this leads to friction and resistance.
  • Governance gaps: Agents work with data. Without clear guidelines, efficiency becomes a risk.

Anyone who implements Microsoft 365 E7 without thoroughly checking these points will increase complexity rather than effectiveness.

A deliberately critical stance

Microsoft 365 E7 isn’t a must-buy. Nor is it a quick fix. It shows how work is changing: AI is becoming a key player. Control is becoming more important than a wide range of features. Governance is more important than speed.

Microsoft 365 E7 is a sensible choice when organisations are ready in organisational, technical and financial terms. Where this level of readiness is lacking, or where individual components do not justify their cost, it is better to exercise caution. It is not the licence that determines success, but the ability to manage AI in a controlled, targeted and cost-effective manner.

Guidance rather than a purchasing decision

Before deciding on Microsoft 365 E7, it is important to have a clear understanding of your organisation’s readiness and the cost-effectiveness of the solution. A structured consultation helps to verify assumptions and evaluate your options. Our experts will conduct a readiness assessment to determine whether Microsoft 365 E7 is the right choice as a complete package or whether individual components would be more appropriate.

Microsoft 365 E7 isn’t about ‘more’. It’s about ‘the right fit’.
